Vision & Why – What gets you out of bed in the mornings?

A vision evolves from an idea.

The reasons we start a project or a type of career may simply to be provider for ourselves or the family.

But once we’re earning enough to cover the bills and enjoy a holiday the reality is what keeps you motivated, why do you get out of bed in the morning?

What keeps you driven and focused on your goals is a much deeper ‘why’. It’s this ‘why’ that inspires people to follow you, that creates culture and whilst this is business- frankly it gives your life meaning and purpose.

Money is a by-product of success in business, the result, and not the be all and end all.

Big corporate companies create managers that follow processes to drive profits.

Leaders create leaders that build a vision together, instill the ‘why’ and allow the people to become successful and in doing so reach the shared goals of the business.

So what's your why?

Mine was exactly as above.

The recession hit and people struggled to have money for the personal training I was doing at the time, so out of necessity and incredible kindness from a friend, Matthew Chant. I retrained into a trade that I knew was recession proof.

Everyone has a boiler and bathroom in this country!

Whilst the world’s economy is built on fossil fuels, Natural Gas has a way to go before the company adapts into offering renewable energy. I started as Domestic Gas Solutions in 2009. When I met my business partner Lisa Catto at a BNI networking event we changed the business name to Marvel.  This was for a number of reasons- “marvel” at our efficiency, speed and communication. But more so the foundation was about our heroic core values:

Honour; Integrity; Fighting Injustice; and helping those that can’t help themselves. The values that you would expect heroes to operate within.

My ‘why’ became two things-

  • Creating opportunities for those around me and then making those people the best versions of themselves.
  • Secondly – creating a legacy – a company that had such a powerful ‘why’ and set of values that it will continue to offer people value and opportunity, as well as look after my family and close circle long after I’m gone.

With a ‘why’ like that how can I fail? How can I not be motivated to drive change, continue to develop and develop my people?

What's your 'why'?

Make it,

create it, feel it,

then own it.

We were not designed and put upon this earth to work 60 hours a week or to earn money – we are here ultimately to make the lives of people around us better.

Are you ready? To evolve; grow and move towards completing the goals of your company?

Create a strong enough foundation. A strong enough ‘why’ and you’ll never work a day in your life.

I look forward to sharing the various ‘why’s’ of different business owners- there is huge motivation hearing another persons passion.

Collaboration not competition. People before profits.
